If the roof on your home has seen better days, you may be starting the process of finding a reliable company to replace your roof. While you may be tempted to call the first roofing contractor that pops up online , a new roof is a big investment, and there are several things to consider before hiring a roofing contractor to replace your old roof.
- Be sure to hire a roofing contractor who has the specific skills required for your particular situation. Some contractors are more experienced and knowledgeable about a particular roofing material or style. You don’t want to hire a roofing contractor who may inadvertently cover up an existing problem that you may not notice for years to come. Hiring a general contractor to replace your roof may not be the best option either. While most understand the basics of roof installation, many do not have as much training and experience as a dedicated roofing contractor.
- Licensed and Insured. The effort required to obtain a license helps ensure that a roofing contractor and their employees are adequately trained. Before a roofing contractor receives a license, they must undergo formal training and pass several tests. Licensed contractors must also carry insurance which protects both the roofer and the homeowner, giving you peace of mind that the company and roofer you chose will do the work correctly.
- Get Three Bids. The bid price can vary widely among roofing contractors . Be sure to compare apples to apples as much as possible and realize that the lowest bid doesn’t necessarily indicate the lowest level of satisfaction, nor the highest bid the highest level of satisfaction. Find a balance between the two and be sure to compare the quality of the materials as well as the warranty.
- Ask friends and neighbors who they have used in the past and be sure to read online reviews. Customer feedback is often the most reliable method to assess if a roofing contractor has the right experience, materials and quality of workmanship you are looking for.
